Qualifications

  • Finance Degree Texas A&M ’71 – The County Judge is the Chief Budget Officer for the county.
  • Served as firefighter, operator then lieutenant with Bryan Fire Department while also ranching from 1973-1979.
  • Self employed rancher from 1979-1992 – Understand how property taxes affect small businesses.
  • Served as elected Constable 1993-2002 with a Master Peace Officer License – Criminal Justice, i.e. law enforcement, courts, and jails make up the largest share of the county budget.
  • Served as a Brazos County Commissioner since January 2003 to Present - Only candidate with firsthand experience on the Commissioner Court.
  • Completed the Commissioners Court Advanced Curriculum Program – 64 hours of training sponsored by the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas.
  • 2008 graduate of the Commissioners Court Leadership Academy.


Accomplishments as County Commissioner:

  • Partnered with cities of Bryan and College Station on a new health insurance plan that has already saved the county over a million dollars.
  • Continuing to upgrade the county computer systems making more information available to the public over the internet.
  • Supported Law Enforcement:
    • Currently building a new jail made possible by the approval of a bond issue by the voters in Brazos County that should be sufficient for the next 20 years.
    • Building of the Sheriff Administration Building near the jail.
    • Supported appointment of magistrates where necessary for efficient case resolutions.
  • Purchased the First Baptist Church building and remodeled into administrative office space; this will make possible the conversion of the Courthouse into a dedicated courts building.
  • Awarding of the contract for the First Phase remodel of the Courthouse.
  • Completion of the highly successful Expo Complex Phase I and beginning of Phase II that will be funded by Hotel Occupancy Tax. 
  • Moving to a more efficient record retention system by digitally scanning records and therefore sending 44 tons of paper to be recycled in the past year.


Goals

  • Move tax office to a location more accessible to the entire county, including College Station.
  • Convert the current tax office to space for use by family court, precinct 4 JP and constable.
  • Continue to advocate upgrading HWY 21 E to 4 lanes to I-45 giving Brazos County near Interstate quality roads in four directions.
  • Continue to improve Brazos County services, roads, law enforcement and courts with responsible management of tax dollars.
